Nimmagadda is not happy with court intervention
State Election Commissioner, Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar is not happy with the AP High Court orders cancelling the election schedule. He had already filed a petition to the division bench against the single judge orders. The case is to come up for hearing on Tuesday.
Nimmagadda, as it appears, had turned the State Election Commission into an opposition party in AP politics. Though expected to work in coordination with the State government, he prefers to defer with the government like the opposition.
As the opposition had become very weak in the state, particularly in the Legislature, with just 23 MLAs in the House of 175, Nimmagadda is playing the real opposition in the state. He did not consult the state nor take the views of the state government when he postponed the elections on March 15, 2020.
Though he claims that the SEC is independent and powerful than the state government, and conducting elections to the local bodies is a constitutional obligation, one wonders what prevented him from fulfilling this constitutional obligation in 2018, when Chandrababu Naidu was the chief minister.
Even after this imbroglio, he did not follow the Supreme Court direction, which wanted the SEC to consult the state before resuming the elections. His consultation process was looked more a formality than obligation. Moreover, he did not inform the state nor reveal his mind during consultation, that schedule would be released only for the Gram Panchayats, though the process was initiated for ZPTC, MPTC and municipal bodies.
Now, he is not happy with the court suspending the schedule and had gone for appeal. The entire process and every development that he made, looked more a pro-opposition than a constitutional action. People are talking about his intentions, his meeting with the BJP leaders in a hotel in Hyderabad, his interactions with the TDP leaders in Mopidevi of Krishna district, even after releasing the schedule. All these point an accusing finger at him.
With all his anti-TDP, Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar would go down in the history as the only State Election Commissioner who had lowered the image of the institution.
