AP CS rules out SEC’s decision on local polls

It is a continuing war between the State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar and the AP government over the local body elections.
As the SEC had proposed to resume the local body elections in February 2021, and he is scheduled to meet Governor Biswabhushan Harichandan this morning, to apprise him of the SEC’s preparedness for the same, the State government had written to him advising him to wait for the “government’s preparedness to hold the elections.”

Chief Secretary Nilam Sawhney had written to the SEC stating that the situation in the state is not conducive to hold the elections. She also raised objection to the SEC’s comparison of the Covid19 situation in the state with other states and said that “a comparison amongst states may not present correct picture,” as ‘various states have followed different strategies to deal with the pandemic.’
She further cited the caution given by the Central government about the possible spread of Covid19 during the cold/winter months. “We cannot afford to have another surge having already lost 6,890 human lives,” the chief secretary said in her letter to prove the claims of the SEC that the situation is conducive for holding elections and his claims that several states are holding elections.

“As and when the situation becomes conducive for the conduct of the elections to the local bodies, the state government will immediately inform the State Election Commission regarding its preparedness and readiness in resuming the adjourned elections,” the chief secretary firmly said ruling out the possibility of holding elections as desired by the SEC.

She further said that “taking a decision for holding elections during a particular period may not be in the best interests of the safety and health of the citizen of AP,” and requested the SEC to “re-examine any decision in this regard.” She had justified the state government’s position and cancelled the district collector’s meeting to be held on November 18 to review the preparedness of the districts for the elections.
