Poor Response To OTT Release A Bad Sentiment?
With the closure of theaters for the past three months, movie releases are put on hold. Some filmmakers have opted for direct release on OTT platforms but the producers of medium & high budget films are waiting for the reopening of theaters. The majority of the films they are eyeing on OTT release are below 15 crores budget.
Surprisingly, all the movies released on OTT platforms in the last couple of months turned out to be disappointments. 'RK Nagar', 'Amrutharamam', 'Run', 'Ponmagal Vandhal', 'Penguin', 'Gulabo Sitabo' etc. films had a direct release. Surprisingly, none of them received unanimous positive talk. The majority of them turned out to be damp squibs and some of them got a mixed response. Unless the movie receives extraordinary reviews, the audience will not waste their time watching average stuff. There is a talk going on in the film circles that OTT releases turned out to be a negative sentiment for films because none of them became hits till now.
In fact, some filmmakers are reportedly worried about this sentiment. But the seniors in the industry are saying that it is too early to come to the conclusion that OTT release is a bad sentiment. Even if we take the case of theatrical releases the success rate is below 15%. That gives a clear picture that 85% of the movies turn out to be disappointments. They are also reminding that the filmmakers who have the confidence to mint money through theatrical release are not going for OTT release. Their opinion is that one good movie is enough to break this myth.
